Hi all,

is there a way to edit footprint graphics locally in the layout (to avoid library changes)..?
I'd like to remove text from silkscreen print without editing the footprint in the library.

Thanks...

You're not restricted to just using pin name, net names, logic names, component name and part name for attributes. You can create new ones to use in your silkscreen and then be able to remove them from being shown.

You could create a new attribute type and use that in the silkscreen instead of using dumb text so you can delete the attribute if you don't want to display it.

Yes, it's "dumb" text, so i'm afraid, there's no way to remove it in layout.
it would be nice to have the ability to check an option like "free graphical edit" in component (footporint) properties in the layout.
I know this feature from some other ECAD tools, i worked with in the past...

A previous CAD tool that I used years ago had a feature called "Explode Silkscreen" and "Restore Silkscreen".

You selected a footprint, used "Explode Silkscreen" which meant the silkscreen was no longer part of the footprint but individual line/arc elements for both component shapes and text. You could them select individual elements and delete or move them.

"Restore Silkscreen" brought back the original silkscreen - however it also left the previously exploded elements on the board as well since these were no longer parts of the component footprint any more.

The tool was called ECSAS, ran on a Sun Sparcstation 2 with a digitiser tablet and pen, and was pretty horrible with no netlist, no schematic capture, and wire frame graphics but it did have one or two things that were nice.

What is the text you want to remove?

Steve is saying that you can't remove "dumb" text - i.e. text that's been added to the footprint using Insert Text.

You can remove attributes though by just selecting them and pressing the delete key, the main one being <Component Name> attribute.

If you are putting text down for things like Pin 1 you can select the pad and use Insert Attribute Pin Name to add silk screen for pin 1 that you can move and delete at whim in different PCB designs. Simarly you can do the same with other attributes such as <Logic Name> to indicate polarity on a footprint or a user-defined attribute.

Thanks for your reply.

Then, i have to use an alternative footprint.

Maybe, this feature could be implemented in one of future releases.

No, if the text is an integral part of the silkscreen of the footprint, the display/processing results will apply to all the silkscreen data.

Although it does mean library edits, you could have an alternative footprint with the text removed, then select the one suitable for a given design.
